It is certainly easier for someone with good credit to find ways to reduce their monthly obligations, but it is not impossible if we own a home and have less than perfect credit. The key is finding the best solution to the problem. In some cases work with a debt management company is a better solution than a consolidation loan. Weight both options before we make a decision.

I disagree with your assessment. We are still 2 to 3 years away from the bottom of the foreclosure mess. Here why:
Option ARM will be adjusting/estimated 80% deliquency
lender backlog of foreclosed properties driving down values, they will increase those listings soon
Poor economy- housing won't bottom out till job market improves
Another round of foreclosures will start in 2013 when the loan mods start to adjust up.
We are starting to see the decline of the American Empire. The most galling fact is we haven't learned anything about these booms. (dot com, housing, and the worst of all printing money like it is going out of style. The only segment getting rich is Wall Street. I predict by 2012 we will have the National Guard on Wall Street to save those blood suckers from th angry mobs.

Many debt settlement companies end up ruining your credit and taking you for THOUSANDS of dollars in the process.

Check out the book The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. You can usually find it for $10 or less.

Our family has totally transformed our lives and are now free of credit card bills and other loans. It was a simple, common sense solution. You'll be glad you did it!

Thousands of dollars vs a $10 book? No brainer! It really works!

Great question. Good luck!

I work for a company that helps people out of debt without consolidation loans. It helps you pay off your interest based debts in 1/2 to 1/3 the time.

Go to this website and get a free analysis done to see if you qualify and see how much interest you can save.

The analysis won't ask for any account numbers, social security information, and such so no worries.

Also the company is rated highly with the Better Business Bureau, articles in leading magazines has been written on the company, and the company won the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for its Region in Financial Services and is up for the national award in November.

Check it out before you try anything else.

If you go the debt consolidation route be careful there are a lot of cmpanies that will end up hurting your creit or worse in debt.

I have to be honest, my initial reaction to your question is that it's not going to happen for you. Nothing personal, I hope you do succeed in getting rid of this debt. But your follow up question about consolidating to a low monthly payment says to me that you don't yet have the motivation to do what's really necessary.

You should know that, in general, debt consolidation does not fix anything. In fact in many cases it gives people a temporary sense of relief or even tempts them to splurge on purchases they'd been putting off. If you don't deal with the underlying behavior that got you here, there's a very real chance you'd end up with all your old debts back PLUS the debt consolidation loan.

If you really intend to get out of debt, there's not much magic to it. You only need two things: a goal and a way to track spending. Being free of that $4,000 debt has to matter more to you than all the extra stuff you're used to spending money on. Until you really feel that way, there's not a system in the world that can force you to succeed.

Good luck!
